Methods that focus on housing

CBAW (Contextual guidance in living autonomously, Flanders)

The idea is that the context of the youngster is the starting point for the guidance. When youth exit out of home care, the professional guarantees a continuation of care, best in accordance with other professionals. The guidance is completed when the goals that are put forward are reached. More information in Dutch in: https://steunpuntwvg.be/images/rapporten-en-werknotas/rapport-bzw

Jeugddorp

Kaizen (part of Jeugddorp, Flanders) is a residential and ambulant care program for youth between 18-25. The goal is to create a stable life environment for the youngster. Living here is combined with ‘contextual guidance’. Another part of jeugddorp is KaJac. The idea here is that the youngster’s care in Kaizen is combined with guidance from JAC (the Flemish Youth Advice Centre). This way there can be focused care for young people leaving out of home care between 17,5 and 21 years old.

Housing first for youth (HF4Y)

In line with the ‘housing first model’, there is a ‘housing first for youth’, this because youth have different needs that should be addressed differently. Housing first for youth is aimed at youth at risk of homelessness. Since youth leaving care are a vulnerable group, risking homelessness, this approach could be of help for them.

In the Netherlands, Limor is currently implementing housing first for youth. They focus on the relationship with the youngster and from that point, they work on their housing situation; so far, Limor has good experiences with housing first for youth (more information at: https://www.limor.nl/).

The method is described clearly by Gaetz (2017) and can be found by this following this link: https://www.homelesshub.ca/sites/default/files/COH-AWH-HF4Y.pdf

Udayan care – after care

Udayan care combines housing for after care with medical check-ups, learning a vocation (when they are not in other training or education), workshops and guidance on life skills. For this they work together with NGO’s, colleges, institutes and centres. More information at: https://www.udayancare.org/after-care/after-care-programme#slideshow-0
